About El Salvador

In El Salvador, women and children are at a particularly high risk of trafficking and exploitation. Gangs lure vulnerable populations in with ‘job opportunities’, but exploit them through forced sex work or forced labour (The Borgen Project, 2019). Previous reports highlight how gangs “recruit, train, arm, and subject children to forced labor in illicit activities – including assassinations, extortion, and drug trafficking – and force women and children to provide sexual services and childcare for gang members" children (USDOS, 2018: 175 - 176).

Global Family has been working in El Salvador since 2016 starting girls’ empowerment clubs in rural areas. In November 2018, we hosted a girls’ club camp that strengthened club communities and continued to teach girls about how to protect themselves from systematic abuse.
